In the FM mode, during transmission pauses, an annoying hiss can be heard on unoccupied frequencies.

In the commercial and military radio communications, where only short voice messages are transmitted, the constant noise can be annoying.

The squelch circuit, which mutes the receiver during transmission pauses and only opens the speaker when messages are transmitted, can help. Usually, the squelch threshold can be adjusted; in the zero position, the receiver is not muted and the noise is always audible.
