The Munich based company Rohde & Schwarz is one of the major manufacturers
of communications equipment and got an excellent reputation for their development
of aircraft communications equipment, VHF- FM- equipment and measurement devices.
With the heavyweight EK 07, Rohde & Schwarz tried
to catch up with Collins communications receivers - the Rohde sets surpass these
as far as weight and dimensions are concerned.
The later sets EK 047 / EK 049 have also been sold under Siemens label, with
tthe EK 070 presented in 1979, Rohde & Schwarz reached the top of shortwave
receiver technology for commercial and military applications. The succeeding
sets were the EK 085 and the fully microprocessor controlled sets of the EK 890
series. These sets have been sold with many different options as single and double
receivers; only the size of the DSP receiver EK 896 still reminds the so-called
boatanchor receivers - this set is still in use by commercial telecommunications
operators and monitoring services.
